Workforce Development and Community Education

Sandburg provides classes, workshops, educational day trips, and events to inspire learning that enriches lives both professionally and personally at both our Galesburg and Carthage locations. Offerings are designed to attract everyone with a desire to learn, regardless of previous academic experience or career path. The following services promote lifelong learning from children to adults. Current course schedules can be viewed on the Sandburg website under Academics or by visiting http://sandburg.edu/Academics/Workforce-Development-and-Community-Education/index.html.

Workforce Development

Workforce Development serves the business and industrial community throughout the Sandburg district by providing credit classes, non-credit classes, seminars, workshops, on-site training programs, and customized training. Workforce staff will assist businesses in analyzing their needs and will work to arrange appropriate college services.

Training classes may be held at Carl Sandburg College’s Main Campus, in Galesburg, or at the company’s location depending on their needs. Workforce Development classes are also available through the Branch Campus in Carthage.

Community Education

Community Education classes are held at various locations throughout the district and include non-credit, general interest classes for personal growth and enjoyment. Classes may be offered in areas such as history, art, computers, gardening, crafts, cooking, fitness and more. In addition, Sandburg offers educational day trips that provide individuals with a chance to explore interesting topics and visit unique places. Offerings are designed for various age and interest groups. Suggestions and ideas are always encouraged and can be shared by contacting the Director of Workforce and Community Education by phone at 309-345-3501 or by e-mail at community@sandburg.edu.

Youth Programs

Sandburg offers short-term classes for youth that are designed to challenge students and inspire learning in a fun environment. Participants learn about various professional fields through hands-on activities, company tours, guest speakers and more. Past offerings include programs designed to give youth an opportunity to explore professional careers in health care, manufacturing, criminal justice, and computer science. In addition to career exploration programs, young athletes have gained firsthand instruction from Carl Sandburg College coaches and players at sports camps for cross country, basketball, volleyball, softball, and soccer. Summer programs are held at the campuses in Galesburg and Carthage as well as at various community locations.

The Kids on Campus summer program attracts students in K-6 from across the College’s district and is offered at Sandburg’s Branch Campus in Carthage. Kids on Campus is open to all students, regardless of academic standing. Courses have included the following subject areas: art, science, math, history, writing, cooking, health, physical fitness, performing arts, astronomy, music, and more. Summer program flyers are distributed to area schools in March or April each year.
