This course provides the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behaviors) competencies to prepare the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Patient Care Technician (PCT) with specialized training to work as an Emergency Room Technician (ER Tech) in a hospital emergency room or Urgent Care setting. The Emergency Room Technician is a member of the health care team who provides support services to the patients and staff by performing procedures and various clerical duties to ensure a smooth flow of information and functions within the Emergency Department under the supervision of a physician or nurse. This course will focus on the role and responsibilities of the ER Tech, legal and ethical considerations, preparing the patient for examination, documenting patient care, maintaining patient safety, performing and assisting with special procedures, and collecting laboratory specimens. Emphasis in airway management, orthopedic immobilization procedures, confidentiality, transporting patients, proper lifting techniques, infection control, sanitation of equipment/environment, maintaining inventory, and performing daily equipment checks. Students will observe, participate, and perform in the functional role of the Emergency Room Technician in a simulated clinical setting and emergency department. This course is composed of 24 theory hours, 8 lab hours, and 24 clinical practicum hours.
