The Patient Care Technician Program is a one-year certificate that provides students with entry-level knowledge and clinical skills necessary to enter the health care field. As one of the fastest growing health care occupations, patient care technicians are most commonly employed in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and home health care agencies. Daily hands-on direct and indirect patient care include, but are not limited to, taking vitals, performing personal care, performing ECGs, blood draws, and specimen collection.
Working Conditions
Patient Care Technicians work closely with nurses, nursing assistants, and other health care professionals. Most work will consist of 8-hour and/or 12-hour shifts which could include evenings, weekends, and holidays. If you are considering this field, you must be able to accurately record and report information, maintain confidentiality, and present a calm and professional demeanor to patients, families, and co-workers. Employment
Employment of Patient Care Technicians is projected to grow 11% from 2016-2026, faster than the average for all occupations. Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor.
Licensure
Upon successful completion of NUA.105, the student will be eligible to take the Illinois State Certified Nursing Assistant examination.
Program Requirements
Students will be required to show proof of immunizations and required titers, TB test, physical examination, criminal background check, and drug screen. Students are responsible for all fees incurred, in addition to tuition. Please refer to the Patient Care Technician Cost Sheet. Please note findings on the criminal background check and drug screen may prevent entrance into the Program. Findings on the physical examination and drug screen may prevent placement at clinical sites.
