The Welding AAS is designed to provide the graduate with skills needed to enter employment in local industry as an entry-level welding supervisor or floor foreman for construction firms, agricultural enterprises, and heavy machine or food manufacturing fabrication. This program is designed to provide students with a hands-on welding degree that emphasizes training and the mastery of welding techniques through lab projects and experiential activities in industry. The program includes essential components required for success in the industry today such as mathematics, communication, attendance, and productivity, and basic business skills.
Welding AAS Program Goals
- Develop skills using hand and power tools used in industry
- Develop the ability to read and follow welding blueprints and related technical manuals to fabricate welding projects
- Understand the practical application of mathematical computations used in the welding industry
- Develop an awareness of the responsibility and need for safe procedures that must be followed in the lab and/or work environment
- Demonstrate torch cutting with gas applications and plasma cutting
- Demonstrate GMAW, Pulsed Spray/Spray and FCAW
- Demonstrate SMAW, GTAW
- Complete SMAW 2G and 3G V-groove
- Complete GMAW-S workmanship
- Complete FCAW-G workmanship
- Complete GTAW Stainless, Mild steel, and Aluminum Workmanship
- Understand employer expectations and skills for success in the workplace including hiring processes in industry, professionalism, communication, and accountability
- Demonstrate mastery of skills aligned with American Welding Society (AWS) level 1 competencies
- Obtain OSHA 10 safety certifications
- Understand the chemical and physical concepts of metallurgy and physical science components of welding
- Understand the fundamental business and technical skills utilized in the workplace
Admission to the Program: Open
- Complete an application for admission and, if desired, apply for financial aid.
- Send an official high school transcript or GED score report to the Admissions and Records Office.
- Complete the placement exam.
- Meet with an advisor/counselor to select classes and complete the registration process.

Students enrolled in the Welding AAS degree must complete all WEL, MFG, MET, and MTL courses with a grade of “C” or better to graduate.

The Center for Manufacturing Excellence (CME) offers classroom space, a computer lab, and houses Carl Sandburg College’s welding program. The College’s weld lab offers 26 bay stations. The welding area offers two welding simulators, as well as state of the art multi process welding machines.
