American Welding Society - Level 1 Certificate

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Advanced Welding Certificate  may be of interest to you. American Welding Society Level I is currently under review. Please contact the Welcome Center (309.345.3500 or welcomecenter@sandburg.edu) or your advisor for more information.

The American Welding Society certificate is designed to provide students with technical skills needed to become a level 1 certified welder. The graduate will be proficient in SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, OFC, OAW, PAC, and GTAW procedures, mathematic calculations, and reading blueprints. Students receive various levels of welding proficiency after successfully completing tests which measure their welding skills.

American Welding Society Level I Certificate Program Goals

  • Provide students with opportunities to acquire knowledge and develop skills used in the welding industry and to become familiar with career opportunities in the welding industry.
  • Develop skills using hand and power tools of the industry in SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, OFC, OAW, PAC, and GTAW procedures.
  • Develop the ability to read welding diagrams and related technical manuals and to practice effective listening and communication skills.
  • Provide students with the practical application of mathematical computations used in the welding industry.
  • Develop an awareness of the responsibility and need for safe procedures that must be followed in the lab and/or work environment.

Labor Market Need for Welders, Cutters, Solderers, and Brazers:

2015 Median Pay: $38,150 per year; $18.34 per hour

Employment change 2014 - 2024: 14, 400 positions available

Admission to the Program: Open

First-Time Enrollees

  1. Complete an application for admission and, if desired, apply for financial aid.
  2. Send an official high school transcript or GED score report to the Admissions and Records Office.
  3. Complete the placement exam.
  4. Meet with an advisor/counselor to select classes and complete the registration process.

The Center for Manufacturing Excellence (CME) offers classroom space, a computer lab, and houses Carl Sandburg College’s welding program. The College’s weld lab offers 26 bay stations. The welding area offers two welding simulators, as well as state of the art multi process welding machines.
