CNC Programmer Certificate

The CNC Programmer certificate program gives an overview of essential machine shop practices including machine safety, blueprint reading and part inspection methods. CNC machine programming, set-up and operation will also be covered in-depth. Graduates of this program will have the skills necessary for entry-level employment in a machine shop setting. Special emphasis will be placed on learning the skills necessary to transform raw material into a finished part. Students will be able to apply the techniques learned in lectures within a machine shop setting. Overall, this program is intended to introduce students to many different aspects within a machine shop setting.
The CNC Programmer Certificate is conferred upon successful completion of the required courses and prerequisites. All required prerequisites are accomplished by successfully completing the CNC Operator Certificate.
CNC Programmer Certificate Program Goals
- Apply basic safety practices in the machine shop
- Interpret industrial/engineering drawings
- Apply precision measuring methods to part inspection
- Perform basic machine tool equipment set-up and operation
- Perform programming, set-up, and operation on CNC milling centers
- Perform programming, set-up, and operation on the CNC turning centers
The content of this course requires the student to work in an environment that requires communication and critical thinking to ensure the safety of themselves as well as classmates and the instructor. An understanding and demonstration of the skills and knowledge to function within the environment of the manufacturing machine tool sector will be challenged as new concepts and exercises are introduced. The student will develop the ability to solve problems while thinking through various pathways.
Admission to the Program: Open
First-Time Enrollees
- Complete an application for admission to the College and, if desired, apply for financial aid.
- Send an official high school transcript or GED score report to the Admissions and Records Office.
- Complete the placement exam.
- Meet with a Student Success Advocate/Advisor to select classes and complete the registration process.

Building G at Carl Sandburg College is home to multiple industrial training programs including the Computer Numerical Control program. Instruction is delivered by individuals with industry-specific expertise and includes specialized coursework utilizing technical equipment. The CNC Program offers training in programming, setup, and operations while housing multiple lathes, mills, and CNC Machines as well as simulators to properly train students for a career in the machining industry.
