The Health Care Assistant Program is a one-semester certificate designed to prepare competent health care team members with the fundamental tools necessary to step into entry-level health care. This Program provides opportunities for students to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to function effectively and provide professional care as front-line caregivers. Health Care Assistants receive direction and supervision from other health professions, including but not limited to nurses and physicians.

Working Conditions

Health Care Assistants work mainly in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and home health care agencies. Health Care Assistants work closely with nurses and other health care professionals. Most work will consist of 8hour and/or 12-hour shifts, which could include evenings, weekends, and holidays. If you are considering this field, you must be able to accurately record and report information, maintain confidentiality, and present a calm and professional demeanor to patients, families, and co-workers. Please refer to the Essential Skills & Abilities of a Health Care Assistant to determine if you are able to meet these functions with or without reasonable accommodations.

Employment

Employment of Health Care Assistants is projected to grow 11% from 2016-2026, faster than the average for all occupations. Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor.

Licensure

Upon successful completion of NUA.105, the student will be eligible to take the Nursing Assistant certification examination.

Program Requirements

Students will be required to show proof of TB test, criminal background check, and CPR at the Health Care Provider level. Students are responsible for all fees incurred, in addition to tuition. Please refer to the Health Care Assistant Cost Sheet. Please note findings on the criminal background check may prevent entrance into the Program.
