CHM 240 - Principles of Biochemistry Credit(s): 3 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0
Introduces the chemical principles underlying biological systems. Topics include the structure and properties of water and biological macromolecules; amino acids and protein structure and function; enzyme kinetics and regulation; carbohydrate, lipid, and nucleotide chemistry; membrane structure; bioenergetics and thermodynamics; central metabolic pathways including glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation; metabolic integration and regulation; and an introduction to DNA replication, transcription, and translation. Emphasis is placed on the molecular and chemical basis of cellular processes. Applicable toward graduation at Sandburg where program structure permits: Degree or Certificate: AA, AS, AFA, AAS, AGS, and Certificates where applicable (1.1)
