CHM 240 - Principles of Biochemistry

Introduces the chemical principles underlying biological systems. Topics include the structure and properties of water and biological macromolecules; amino acids and protein structure and function; enzyme kinetics and regulation; carbohydrate, lipid, and nucleotide chemistry; membrane structure; bioenergetics and thermodynamics; central metabolic pathways including glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation; metabolic integration and regulation; and an introduction to DNA replication, transcription, and translation. Emphasis is placed on the molecular and chemical basis of cellular processes.
